Katy Perry - California Dreams Tour - Review - Liverpool Echo Arena - 18th October 2011

Pop princess Katy Perry stormed into town with her candy floss brigade for the second time this year, returning for another sold out show, exactly one year on from announcing she would be embarking on the California Dreams Tour. I waited that long I got the date wrong and nearly missed it! That would have been devastating with the way it panned out!

The first thing we were greeted with  when we got to the arena was the sweet smell of strawberry candy floss, as a special added touch the scent was pumped throughout the arena, no expenses spared, we were in for something special.

First up was the first of Katy’s special guests, ‘Oh Land’. The electro-pop singer worked her way though a lengthy 40 minute set, to the unfortunate dismay of some. The energy she put into the performance was immense and I was suitably impressed but as far as the majority of the modern pop loving crowd were concerned, she wasn’t of their liking and attention spans fizzled out quicker than a Catherine wheel.  It was down to Katy’s other special guest, DJ Skeet, to hype the crowd and he delivered impressively. With him and the #LiverpoolDreams hash tag allowing people (Who had a signal, have a word with yourself Vodafone) to get their tweets on the big screens, the crowd were kept entertained nicely.

It was show time! The curtain raised, and revealed a stage production that could rival Mr. Willy Wonka himself. There were giant lollipops, sweets, candy canes, flying candy floss clouds, the lot. This all led to the movie we were about to see unfold on the screens, and in live action. The story played to us involved Katy suffering at the hands of a gruesome butcher character, falling for the cupcake boy and being transported in a dream to Candyfornia to find her missing cat, ‘Kitty’. As strange as it sounds, the concept was delivered in a theatre like musical show, with the mini movies filling out the interludes splendidly whilst perfectly complimenting the songs they would lead in to.

The first song we heard was 'Teenage Dream', and Katy marched out in a sweet filled dress, raising the roof instantaneously. She stormed her way through my favourite, 'Hummingbird Heartbeat', along with some of her best from the 'One Of The Boys' generation, 'Ur So Gay' and 'Waking Up In Vegas', human slot machine included of course.

Costumes changes and movie clips later, a giant peacock was formed out of her outfit for an incredible performance of, you guessed it 'Peacock'.

Stopping for regular jokes with the crowd, she brought a boy up on stage for a kiss, had a laugh about her husband being backstage and the guy having to 'watch his back for the rest of his life', leading the way for the infamous ‘I Kissed a Girl’. She started off with a nice slowed down intro before kicking into it, all fists pumping. She completely rubbished any claims of a split with the performance and little ring flash, unlucky gossipers, in yo face!

This was followed by the likes of ‘Circle the Drain’ and ‘E.T’ which saw Katy slightly revert back to her initial indie/rock self which is what I love her for, I could see refreshing sparks of it for a moment or two at least.

After some spectacular laser work, the mood was toned down and this is where the biggest surprise of the night came, in the form of Katy’s remarkable vocals. She’s not exactly know for being the best singer around, and there's a lot of people who will say she can't sing at all and definitely not live, so to hear her sing ‘Pearl’, ‘The One That Got Away’ and even a cover of Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’, so beautifully, was a pleasant surprise. Seeing her float across the full length of the arena on a candy floss cloud was another one.

I think she got her cue wrong for the sitting on the swing moment, the poor girls!

The best part of the evening saw her raise the roof once again as she worked through her huge hits ‘Hot n Cold’ (magic trick, super quick costume changes included).

‘Last Friday Night’, which got a bit too cringy and imitated something you would expect to see at Pontins. Plus it was minus Kathy Beth Terry, how rude of her to be a no show!

And the best moment of the night which had to be ‘Firework’. A full capacity stadium screeching along to such a phenomenal and emphatic song makes for an unforgettable atmosphere. That thrown in with the fireworks on stage made for a big bang!

‘I wanna Dance With Somebody’ was covered after the incredible trio so that every ounce of energy was squeezed out of the crowd, some of whom who were invited on stage to boogie away.

Someone really should have told the girl on the left that she missed Rihanna by 11 days, that could have been me turning up on Saturday with my Katy Perry T-shirt on watching Marilyn Manson or somebody similar had I not been told. Awkward.

Katy was saving nothing as she bounced into the encore, throwing every last bit of her energy into the performance. With ‘California Gurls’,  we had confetti, giant beach balls and some powerful water cannons rounding off an incredible night quite spectacularly.

Katy Perry put on an absolutely phenomenal show. Any criticism of Katy Perry's vocal ability is completely unfounded. I would have liked to have seen the real Katy Perry/Katy Hudson at some point because she kept the character thing up the whole way through even when interacting with the crowds, it was worthy of an Oscar, but for what it was, it was perfect. She was singing, acting, dancing and joking her way to the hearts of the 11,000 who have the pleasure of saying they witnessed a sensational night at the Echo Arena.
