Melanie Fiona - The MF Life - Album Review

I hate the words under rated, anyone who's ever stayed in tune is apparently so, but Melanie Fiona really is under rated, and with a talent like hers, it's tragically so. In an attempt to raise her profile and deliver her music to the vast audience it's deserving of, The MF Life features a whole array of rappers and singers to broaden its appeal. This approach worked well on the opener 'This Time', which features fellow Roc Nation affiliate, J. Cole. Here, Melanie has your shoulders on puppet strings that work in rhythm with every word, not one for listening to when you're out in public, unless dancing the pavements is your thing of course. With any Cole feature spreading like wildfire, and both being reputable enough for Jay-Z and thus the world, this feature makes perfect sense, a T-Pain feature doesn't.

Opening on such highs, gravity is always bound to take its toll and it does with an almighty bang on the closing, so called bonus track - presumably a present for competitors - '6AM'. I mean, you're managed by Hip Hop's best, but you choose an ear piercing feature from auto-tune Annie to be the last memory people take away from your record, ok. With a beautiful and pure voice, the only way to describe the collaboration between these two is to imagine the product of a glistening white dove and a big fat greasy pigeon getting it on, not a pretty birdy.

Moving on before we have nightmares, there are some more moments of hope before the dove is sent into a crash landing. 'Watch Me Work' sees Melanie excel with a rock infused track that would keep you awake even if it was 4AM in the morning. 'Wrong Side Of Love' hits us with a reminder of that raw talent we were treated to on Melanie's debut, The Bridge. A powerful song that can match any of Whitney's greatest. 'Bones' is strong enough to take the album higher even in the rockiest of turbulence. 'Can't Say I Never Loved You' has us smiling within three seconds, official. The stripped back song makes for a perfect moment in the sunshine, reflecting the release date being in the warmer months compared to the wintery music Melanie ordinarily delivers (yes there's such a thing). Another fun track to sing a long to comes courtesy of the B.O.B featuring, 'Change The Record'. The most chart friendly on the album, there'll be a few ruffled feathers if someone does change it.

With a real mix of sounds and artists, The MF Life is definitely less consistent than The Bridge, a little bit too bitty bobby. However, remove 6AM and there is a collection of incredible songs, on individual merit. There's plenty of hairbrush moments to be had with this one. Great album, could be improved, prefer 'The Bridge'.

6/10 - Try Emeli Sandé's 'Our Version Of Events' for a 10/10.

Thanks
