The most anticipated tour of the year finally found it's way to Europe last night as the legendary combo of Jay-Z and Kanye West landed in London, giving 20,000 discerning hip hop fans the chance to Watch The Throne at the O2 Arena. Oh was there a lot to watch!
The throne = The greatest rapper there's been and arguably one of the greatest producers of our time, so inevitably the setlist was going to include hit after hit. Over 40 hits in fact - Incredible, and most of them courtesy of Hov.
To kick things off, Hov and Ye each took to their own stages at separate ends of the arena, and rose up on 20ft high giant blocks like true kings. The O2 Arena is the greatest venue in Europe, the atmosphere is that bit more amplified, the roar from the crowd matched that which was projected on the stage risers, sharks and dogs biting viciously as Jay and ye went in hard as motherf*cka's opening with H.A.M. Following with Who Gon' Stop Me, we were hooked.
The pair never used too many gimmicks for the stage show but the props they did use had maximum effect, the most poignant having to be the huge American flag which instantly signaled Otis and cued a whole load of screams. We had just had the intense energy, now we had the relaxed fun - A moment of perfection as the two pals mucked around on stage together.
A few flames and lasers were the only other effects used in the show yet it was so perfectly orchestrated that it felt like you were being presented with theatrics straight from a movie set.
Ye and Jay bounced off each other making for the greatest tag team. The standard of each performance was continuously taken to the next level, the kind of level that was unimaginable beforehand, the kind of level I can't really even put in to words - anything I write will most likely be bullsh*t because words fail when it comes to describing just how incredible Watch The Throne is live.
All the best songs from each of them, delivered with a little bit of help from the other one, cute little moments of stripped down performances of the likes of New Day, Jay going acapella every now and then, Izzo, Encore, Empire State of Mind, 99 Problems, Touch The Sky leading into Big Pimpin, that then being mixed in with Gold Digger - Unbelievable.
Bad Points - There were a couple:
- 45Mins Late
- Kanye's little Vocoder episode that wasted 5minutes
- Performing Monster
- No Beyoncé
- No Pre-Show as promised
- Kanye's Skirt
- No Hey Mama
- Kanye's Cheeks
- Kanye's general miserable sod attitude
Oh well. These are of course completely forgivable because it was still a masterclass and the best hip hop show this generation could see.
Like F*ck critics, You can kiss my whole asshole
There were a couple of moments I looked around the arena and every single person had their diamonds to the sky - From The Bottom To The Top - It was an incredible sight!
We got 4 versions of In Paris..That Sh*t
You have to go and see it for yourself..only then can you understand why this is just mumble jumble. Powerful!
